Report on initial experiences with free ISP Tritium (http://www.tritium.net ).

I downloaded the 5MB install file from the Tritium web page (userid/password are required just to download the software) at work to my mobile racked harddrive, and brought it home. The install went smoothly and quickly, requiring a reboot because it installs Winsock 2. It takes you though setup of a new DUN dialer. Very slick.

From the Win95 desktop, I click on the Tritium Network shortcut icon. The program fires up the ad bar which is fixed in size and position. It is about 1" high across the entire bottom of my 17" monitor. The program then fires up the dialer and connects (for me) to their local Fort Worth number (40K/sec the first time, and 44K the second time.) Then I start up my existing browser, MSIE 3.01.

I had to readjust the browser window sizes since the ad bar cannot be eliminated. In fact, the only way to even partially cover it is when you have a normally hidden left or right side taskbar uncloak. If the taskbar is hidden at the bottom, when it uncloaks, the ad bar jumps up so it is always fully visible. The ads change every 15 seconds or so. I find them mildly annoying, but feel I can eventually get used to them. The hardest part for me to accept is that the ad bar is not parkable at the side, since I prefer long narrow windows to short fat ones. I submitted a Q to their T/S but I doubt they will allow side parking since it would require each ad to be reformatted. But, a 17" monitor has lots of real estate, so it's not so bad.

And, being totally free, Tritium's price is certainly right. Look out AOL.
