E*trade unlike schwab has a better brand name in on-line trading. This will only continue to become more and more important.

People will think of E*trade for trading like they think of yahoo for searching. Looking at yahoo you can see what a difference it makes to be #1.

I agree totally with the points you make. I think the difference is in our opinion of what this will mean. For instance, Schwab has been around quite awhile and has had plenty of time to build up their mutual fund business, whereas Etrad is newer and it would be reasonalbe to expect that it will take time for the mutual funds, non-free research and loans to start generating significant revenue. Etrade is still establishing itself.
