Packard Bell NEC launches sub-$700 PC

SAN FRANCISCO, May 28 (Reuters) - Packard Bell NEC, a privately-held PC maker, said Thursday it
introduced a full-featured personal computer for $699.

Packard Bell said its $699 model, called the Packard Bell 550, is designed around a Cyrix 233 megahertz
MediaGX processor, includes 24 megabytes of memory, has a 2.1 gigabyte hard disk drive, a CD-ROM
player and a 56 kilobit modem. Cyrix is a division of National Semiconductor Corp.

''We believe we are once again setting the standard by being the first major manufacturer to offer a complete,
robust consumer PC at a new, precedent-setting price, $699,'' said Mal Ransom, senior vice president of
marketing for Packard Bell NEC, in a statement. ''We're paving the way for further penetration into the home
PC market.''

Packard Bell NEC was one of the first PC makers to enter the now-booming sub-$1,000 category in January
1997 by offering PCs using Intel technology for $999. Packard Bell said it is now creating a new sub-$700
consumer PC category.

According to International Data Corporation, sub-$1,000 systems will account for 35 percent of U.S.
consumer desktop shipments in 1998.

Packard Bell is also introducing a 750 model that features a Cyrix MediaGX running at 266 megahertz with 48
megabytes of memory and 4.3 gigabyte hard drive for a suggested retail price of $999.

Sacramento, Calif.-based Packard Bell NEC is 49 percent owned by NEC Corp. of Japan.
