Carl, the data shows the flows in or out of each category of mutual fund, including both flows between categories and money coming in or leaving the fund industry as a whole. The numbers in the money market column can be very volatile as many people use MMFs like checking accounts (it is particularly volatile around tax time). Most commentators only focus on the + or - to equity funds and, less frequently, they will comment on bond funds too if it looks like money going from one to the other. It would be an interesting study to see whether the MMF flows are a good predictor of later equity fund flows. In other words, does it indicate the degree of pent-up demand? I don't know. But then, I don't even know if equity fund flows are a good predictor of future market direction.

PS: I wonder if people are stashing their summer vacation money in the MMFs. Or, perhaps, getting ready to pay estimated taxes on 6/15.

sure is quite around here......... i find that interesting as i believe another 20 points is going to be stripped off the S&P in a blink of an eye.....and then another 20..........i like it when noone else is talking about moves in either direction
