<Gold as part of a portfolio>. There was a posting on this recently which I didn't read thoroughly and didn't take in whether the writer was talking about the metal or stocks - but personally I would own gold stocks or a gold mutual fund - because I think there is more leverage than with the metal itself and it's easier to buy and hold - although gold can be held via certificates.

In the 30s in the States it was illegal for individuals to own gold - hence certain stocks (like Homestake) became proxies for gold. The background was one of national emergency. I think it would be difficult for the government to enforce this sort of thing today. E.
