EAST COAST COMPANY AWARDED MAJOR CONTRACT WITH TERRA NOVA
ÿÿÿ ST. JOHN'S, May 29 /CNW/ -The Terra Nova Alliance has selected Secunda Marine Services Ltd., a Canadian-owned marine company to supply two offshore support vessels to the Terra Nova oil field development. ÿÿÿ Selection of Secunda followed a tender process that began in December, 1997.ÿ A total of seven Canadian and international companies tendered for the supply of support vessels to the development.ÿ A detailed assessment of the tenders submitted concluded that the proposal from Secunda was the best business solution, meeting commercial and technical requirements and Terra Nova's commitment to Canada-Newfoundland benefits.ÿ The contract is valued at approximately C$50 million. ÿÿÿ Commenting on the selection of Secunda, Jim Rowley, manager of development services, Terra Nova, said ''This is a significant contract, and we are pleased it has been awarded to a Canadian company.''ÿ He added, ''Secunda's world-wide experience in the marine support sector of offshore oil development and exploration coupled with an intimate knowledge of the local marine environment will be definite assets as it provides supply vessel service to Terra Nova.'' ÿÿÿ The vessels Trinity Sea and Burin Sea have been contracted for four years with an option to renew.ÿ They will provide marine support, re-supply, iceberg management, anchor handling and stand by services. Prior to engagement in 1999, with the commencement of drilling activity at the Terra Nova field, both vessels will undergo a complete re-build to prepare for operations on the Grand Banks. The rebuild work will be carried out in Canada. ÿÿÿ Secunda Marine Services Ltd. was founded in 1983.ÿ With offices in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, Secunda operates a diversified fleet of 17 vessels and employs upward of 500 people. ÿÿÿ ''We look forward to working with the Terra Nova Alliance to successfully deliver safe, efficient service during drilling and operations,'' said Keith Hawley, general manager, of Secunda in Newfoundland.ÿ ''With our experience on the East Coast, our shipping expertise and our well-trained crews, the majority of whom are from Newfoundland and the Maritimes, we are confident in our ability to provide superior service to the development.'' ÿÿÿ The Terra Nova development proponents are: Petro-Canada (operator), Mobil Oil Canada Properties, Husky Oil Operations Ltd., Norsk Hydro, Murphy Oil Company Ltd., Mosbacher Operating Ltd. and Chevron Canada Resources. ÿÿÿ The Terra Nova Alliance, a consortium of companies led by Petro-Canada, will design, construct and install the FPSO, subsea components and pre-production wells necessary for the development of the Terra Nova oil field.ÿ The Alliance consists of:ÿ Petro-Canada, ShawMont Brown and Root, Halliburton Energy Services, FMC Offshore Canada Ltd., PCL Industrial Constructors Inc., Coflexip Stena Offshore Newfoundland Ltd. and Doris ConPro Offshore Ltd. ÿÿÿ The Terra Nova oil field is located on the Grand Banks 350 kilometres east-southeast of St. John's, Newfoundland.ÿ Discovered in 1984, Terra Nova is the second largest field off Canada's East Coast. Estimated reserves are 300-400 million barrels of recoverable oil. The field will be developed using a floating production facility.
