I will address the upgrades. If you go to DPMI and find the DPMI news where the upgrades were announced, you will see that there was ETEC comment included on the upgrades. As I noted at the time, it sounded awfully lukewarm.

It is obvious that ETEC's customers want to extend the life of their
equipment, now that new stuff is becoming so expensive. On the ETEC CC
you will recall that ETEC said that even the first MEBES could be upgraded to current functionality, but at a cost of about 95% of brand new. I presume that more recent models would carry a lower upgrade cost.

Basically, I look at it this way. If I bought a $20,000 car 5 years ago and went to GM for a "like new" $5,000 upgrade, do I think that GM would be just as happy with this compared with my buying a brand new one? My answer in no.
