Here's a reasonable theory to account of the rumors: the additional 13mm2 for the K6-2 aren't all taken by 3DNow instructions. Some of the increase is a result of a reduction in transistor density which, as you pointed out, could have been a factor in AMD's yield problems. If this is indeed the case, then the K6-2 may well have higher yields than AMD's .25u shrink of the vanilla K6.

Its not clear whether this is yield % or number of good chips per wafer, I suspect the former.
