One thing to keep in mind is that the Savage3D is one of the first chips in the market manufactured with a 0.25 micron process, which is just being ramped up at the Taiwan foundries. The press release gave the impression that high volume production would only come into play towards the end of the year, hence initial targeting at the high-end market (using special wafer sources that are not highly cost-effective) to get the chip on the map using loyal accounts such as Hercules. I noticed DIMD recently announced its commitment to the RIVA TNT, indicating that NVIDIA isn't that far from production either. The Savage3D may have a tough time competing with the TNT, if only because of the memory bus bandwidth (1 GB/s vs. 3 GB/s), but of course the Savage3D is likely to go into the mainstream once volume production is fully ramped up.
