Maybe yes and maybe no. If bus speed becomes less important, then what is driving the push away from socket 7? AMD, Cyrix and IDT appear to be firmly entrenched in Socket 7 until well into next year.

After that the picture becomes even fuzzier. AMD wants to go to an Alpha bus. IDT and Cyrix are headed towards a PCI bus interface. I'll believe in the demise of socket 7 when I see it.
