I have not seen this news on any NG, but seems as if there is another potential buyer for Bay. Maybe the reason for the Nortel refusal.

Ericsson mum on Bay rumor
By Reuters Special to CNET NEWS.COM May 29, 1998, 6:45 a.m. PT

STOCKHOLM--Swedish telecom group Ericsson declined to comment on a recurring rumor that it was interested in buying Bay Networks, which rose amid speculation it was the target of a takeover. "This is a rumor we've heard for a long time. It comes and goes. We don't comment on rumors like this," said Lars Ostlund, spokesman for Ericsson business area Infocom Systems. However, he told Reuters Ericsson was looking for
potential partners within datacom, where Bay Networks was active. "But our focus is on smaller to medium-sized companies at the moment. But we aren't ruling out the possibility to make bigger acquisitions," Ostlund said. Bay Networks was not returning phone calls.
