Don't forget that forex is now a market with all the connotations of confidence (and lack of it) that go with investing. For example why do stocks rise and fall with no apparent change to fundamentals? Because of some underlying perception of strength or weakness, right or wrong. In the case of Japan and the yen I think you hit the nail right on the head.
