Interestingly, the best short-short stories on this thread tend to involve some kind of violence. Is that because the form requires a heightened dramatic effect, as it were?

Excellent observation. However, I expect this does not need to be the case, and only happens to be the current theme. As more participants are added there will be non-violent examples from which others will feed. Look for humor to replace violence soon.
