Toshiba to make Project-X game machines...........................next-generation.com E3: VM Labs Reveals Developers and Hardware Partners As promised, VM Labs has revealed the first hardware OEMs and software developers for Project X. May 27, 1998 The first two hardware OEMs for VM Labs are Toshiba and Thompson (General Electric, Magnavox and ProScan). For those who aren't aware, Thompson has the best retail penetration and distribution of any consumer electronics brand in the US. VM Labs showed select members of the press the first Toshiba machine, which looked extremely sexy. Other OEMs are expected to be announced shortly. Strangely, VM Labs did not show any of the MPEG2 DVD capabilities of the machine, though it did display game demos of Tempest 3000 and a Mech game of some variety. Motorola and VM Labs confirmed that they are indeed technology partners on Project X. Motorola will be handling all manufacturing of the media processor, though the rights to do so are non-exclusive. The announcement should be of little surprise to those who have closely followed the system. Previously, Motorola's own web site had furnished details on a console called Blackbird, a system that at its heart had the Project X media processor. On the software side, VM Labs has some major backing already, with games in development from Psygnosis, Activision, Hasbro, Capcom, Crave, THQ, Berkeley Systems, Killer Game, N-Space, Fox Interactive and Saphire. Additional developer support should be announced in the next few weeks. No game titles have been announced as yet. VM Labs has well over 100 kits placed in the development community. However, no single house has more than two or three and most only have one. The company is sending out kits as quickly as it can assemble them, a rate of about 25 per month.
