<<OK John, here's how I see things.>
Rossier and Chuzzelwit this discussion you are having is the exact reason that people like me paid our money to belong to SI. It is also the reason I wade through a couple hundred posts every night after I get out of work. We are trying to learn how the markets work and your posts help so much in that cause. The crap that comes from usually strange bears is trying on my patience just reading some of it. The regular Dell thread followers such as yourselves have a lot more patience with them than seems necessary. Hopefully you will not wear yourselves thin with the banter coming from every new bear that comes along, and continue the Dell dialogue that is available when Dell is on a tear also. Once again thanks for keeping an intelligent dialogue going about Dell computers as they relate to the market and allow the rest of us to learn from your vast experience with this company... Nuf said .....Great posts

CTC,

Excellent post. I would like to add some other issues to the discussion.

It appears that HWP, IBM and CPQ went overboard defending their
server turf during Christmas last year. They reduced DELL's rate of growth in that arena by a < 1%. This is probably where they spent their war chests to buy some market share and growth rate.
Will they continue this type of tactic as we approach Q3 and Q4?

Note: there was a changeover to 100Mhz I/O in slot during the Q4-96. Now this possibly could explain the rate of growth slipping for DELL in Q4. So the effects on the channel may be felt in Q1 and Q2.

The situation between India and Pakistan is very disturbing. The hatred between the countries is irrational and extremely dangerous since it now involves the threat of nuclear exchanges. The consequences of such a dire scenario would affect the entire world and the stock market. As yet there has been no credible international policy formulated to deal with this political madness. Thus we have a new wild card for this year at least if not for the decade ahead.

The delay in the introduction of MERCED may be advantageous.
The reason is the system configuration testing may easily take 6-9 months for each OS. This actually is a small amount of time. So this delay may lead to a less troublesome roll out of MERCED products.
