It is worth remembering that each and every incident of gun use by children has a common theme: the kids were committing a felony by using these guns, perhaps even merely possessing them.
Maybe if we focused on the criminality of these acts and prosecuted them as firearms offenses? I imagine that would do much to stem the apparent tide of youth gun violence.
Jmho, of course.
Back to the matter of perception. I think you are in a minority when you see the USA as being "an aberrant society" obsessed with gun violence. I know that I spend less time thinking about guns than I do thinking about cars or taxes. I'll wager that very few folks in the Coffee Shop are ready to pin a significant portion of our social ills on civilian gun ownership.
I'm not gonna be flippant and say it isn't a problem. But I also won't buy into the idea that it is one of the hinges on which a healthy society hangs.
