That is bad news for PC makers. PC makers need more powerful chips to
make significant inroads into the server market where there is still
big profit margin...

Anyone have any comments on the Merced delay? I've asked the same of Rudedog on the Intel thread. As you say Charles, this would seem to be a possible significant positive for Alpha, giving CPQ a larger chunk of time to sell the hell out of it while shutting out Dell and others due to the slipping schedule at Intel...

More so if 64 bit NT for Alpha is going to be shipped first.
re: <<Well, maybe it gives new life to Alpha.>>
It seems very likely now that Compaq CEO and Microsoft CEO have been very cozy lately (together at the Q&A session yesterday after the CEO submit meeting at Bill Gate's new mansion).

Any of you going to find out and tell us here?
I bet this news/rumor will make you more happy with the stock.

2 basic questions maybe someone can answer. If intel bought dec's CPU business, how does CPQ get alpha, wouldn't that belong to intel, 2)if inventory is EVERYONES big concern, than why wouldn't compaq just write of the second quarter and start the second half of the year with the leanest inventory in the business. ----I know earnings do matter but that strategy while it kills the second quarter would make them MUCH more profitable in the future than current estimates suggest and make them more agile as well.
