<..I reported that Ciena was losing out to Nortel on most of the big
greenfields orders from the likes of Qwest,..>

Funny - Nacchio just a few weeks ago responded to this very question with a definitive 'QWST doesn't NEED Ciena or ANYONE's DWDM', and didn't see this likely for *quite* some time. I would assume the same is true for LVLT and WMB whose high capacity fiber systems will likely not justify the muxing cost for a good while. This is QWST's case for what distinguishes the NEW guys (predominantly QWST) from old WCOM, T and FON fiber systems..

Or did I miss something here?

It seemed CIEN began it's retreat when WCOM delayed deployment, LIKELY to see just what LU had up it's sleeve with their then recently announced 80x.

George . . .

is the Linux Mini-Box page the only place to purchase a Linux computer?

freeyellow.com

Seems like the JAVA proponents are missing an opportunity. You have a robust operating system that has been around for years in Linux. Free browsers like Opera and Netscape. Applications like WordPerfect, and Applix Office Suite. Don't these guys subscribe to the Gilder Technology Report? Build them, add JAVA and they will come . . .

What am I missing?

By the way, you billed me in May for my September subscription. Pretty low tech. I thought I was trying to borrow money from YOU.

Keep up the good work but bill me later. <ggg>

Re Ciena: Well with the merger Ciena will be back as part of the ascendant technology companies Tellabs. Assume you view the merger positively. Would appreciate comment. Also, if you would, how are the "smart" or "software" radios coming along? Tellabs has resources there. Would smart or software radios help re the CDMA One next generation vs W CDMA convergence. Do I understand that such radios could receive either flavor and then convert to a common standard? Any comment here on in your newsletter would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Chaz
