I believe Intel's announcement is just what this industry didn't need right now. I checked the bloomberg, Intel is trying to bust 70, probably will Monday. Dell will probably bust 80. It seems that price wars are really heating up. We just had a CompUSA open here recently, selling $699 HP systems (233 Pentium) and $899 with Monitor and printer.

the low priced (MERCED)chip

I think you have merced confused with some other code name, perhaps celeron. MERCED is going to be a high powevered 64-bit processor designed jointely with HWP. It will be made to run a 64bit version of NT. Solaris and others are also working on OSs to run on it.
