Re: Any thoughts on the significance of the Merced delay in providing an advantage for Alpha?

Intel push-outs and schedule slips are quite common. I don't view this as a big deal and it's really not. The investment community
will likely blow this out of proportion. All the Intel bashers are
drunk with pleasure right now.

The only advantage for Alpha I see is a reprieve from the inevitable
decay of that platform... a 6 month stay of execution if you will. There are just too many powerful economic forces that will drive adoption of WinTel IA64 to an eventual 90% take rate at the high end.
Even so, once Merced begins shipping, it will still take many
quarters to achieve this massive penetration.

The impact to Dell is minor. It's more about the impact to the industry where Dell maintains it's "relative" advantage anyway.

Intel will be rolling out plenty of CPU power in the interim (Willamette up to 1.2Ghz etc.) so there will be no shortage of powerful offerings at the high end of PC space. We'll just have to wait a little longer for the transition to IA64 architecture.

Anyway, all of the details aren't available yet. I'm sure
within a week all will be disclosed and the Intel thread
will dissect the info with surgical precision. That's were I'll
be surfing for answers<ggg>.

I find it odd that they announce this almost immediately after
news of the justice department investigation. I wonder if there
isn't more to this story...
