Zeev, regarding Merced, you wrote: "could it be that the delay is simply because no one is breathing down their neck with a competitive product, and thus they can afford to "milk" the existing product line for another year?"

I think you hit the nail on the head. Why would INTC introduce its pride and joy in a lackluster semi market when it could instead squeeze some more Mhz out of the high-end PII line, where it has no serious challengers? Also, this gives INTC some time to began (should I say "further"?) utilize the Alpha technology it got from DEC. The moment Merced hits the street, Alpha is old news and prices fall through the floor. If you ask me, I think this delay is intentional. Might turn out to be a very smart move.

Zeev, I agree with you. Milk the existing product line and delay spending the money to introduce Merced, thereby reducing short-term costs and improving the quarterly numbers.

Intel has realized that the paradigm of faster, more-powerful, better, sooner no longer works.
