Doug -
I'm not sure what the 2.3 million number represents - CPQ alone shipped nearly 800,000 servers in 1997, and claimed to have 35% of the 'Intel architecture' server market, which would make the 2.3M number about right for just the IA32 server market (CPQ's server line is exclusively Intel based). If we just look at unit numbers, and don't count RISC systems which are used as servers but sold in an ambiguous class (like some of SUN's high end workstation products) the numbers are still close on a unit basis.
On a revenue basis the picture is a lot different, and one of the key questions in my mind is whether Intel plans on helping to lower ASPs in that space or whether they want to move Intel products into high end products at something like today's prices. The second course seems like a better way for Intel to maintain or even increase overall margins going forward.
