Frank, Data networks have to be able to handle higher data rates and use telephone related equipment in their networks: high speed 56K CSU, T1, T3 lines, etc. Data line quality standards are higher than a voice grade line. (I'm worked with 56K CSU's and data lines.) The internet is like a highway that has traffic jams. But IP can go over intranets much quicker. Yes, there can be latency problems depending on how many routers the message has to go through and what kind of transport medium is used. If data is send over fiber optic, it is sent at the speed of light for that portion of the trip. Digital phones already use higher grade phone lines. As mentioned before, many cable companies already have fiber optic to the neighborhood. And they are already offering high speed internet access. With the level of service equipment starting to be offered, youÿwould pay for the priority of service (level of demand) you needed or were willing to pay for. Just as you can pay for a non-cable ISP like AOL, etc. or a cable ISP which is faster but more expensive. Now if someone comes up with an inexpensive phone like device that can send data over that cable modem you actually have the potential of sending the message much quicker than over the phone companies neighbor telephone lines.
