DF-144, by my understanding is designed to be blended with fuel stock of a much lower octane rating to bring the overall octane rating of the mixture up to the 87 - 94 (Sunoco) rating we all see at the pumps. The higher the octane rating of the additive, the less it takes to bring up the overall rating of the stock fuel -- thus saving a bunch of money -- particularly if DF-144 is cheaper to begin with than the other additives available. Excuse the terminology if it is inaccurate, the concept, I am quite sure, is correct.
