Bill, I don't know. I would believe what Intel is saying at the moment. Maybe we can guess that it is due to the fact that Merced is not as good as Alpha yet, especially when I read in the news yesterday that Intel said Merced is still a winner technologically, as if there is alreay some doubt about it ... This is purely my guess.

You may want to check out the Intel thread and ask some of the most knowledgeable Intel experts there.

Here is the Intel thread:

Bill -
I believe that the reason Intel delayed is not Silicon technology but the compiler and OS development schedules. I have covered details of this in other posts.

Also don't rule out the idea that Intel has talked to CPQ about keeping 64 bit development on track independent of Merced schedule via Alpha. This would allow Intel to deliver a really first rate Merced product without losing the 64 bit momentum in the development community.

I would expect CPQ to aggressively push both Alpha and Merced, but as long as Alpha is the performance leader CPQ will drive Alpha as the high end choice. CPQ wants to be the undisputed 64 bit leader.

Intel is accelerating production of all their chips except Merced. Merced is a totally new architecture. I believe Intel. They underestimated the development time.
