NEC Corp is to launch home use video disc recorders (VDRs) to its own multi-media video file (MMVF) technical standard by year-end, the Nikkan Kogyo newspaper reported.

The move is aimed at the post-video tape recorder (VTR) and digital video disc ( DVD ) era, it reported.

The NEC technology, using compact discs, is capable of storing twice the volume of material as possible with DVD -RAM technology, it reported.
