Merced is a 64-bit processor that Intel is developing, with assistance from HP, for the workstation server markets. Intel has a parallel path for development of their 32-bit technology (Pentium and its progeny) for desktop systems. Software will have to be written/compiled separately for the 64-bit processor to get full advantage of it's power. That software won't be compatible with the 32-bit processors. It is likely that software for Merced will be limited to engineering applications and server functions and it is likely to be premium-priced. Not much impact on the desktop market, but the workstation market in five years is estimated to be worth $90B. Why leave it all to Sun Microsystems and DEC?

PS: The CPU was named after a river in Oregon.
