SGI Technology Roadmap...

Eli, I know you know this, but this kind of information is getting to be a FAQ -- so here's pointers to the FAQ answers regarding timeline, strategy, SGI statements etc....

can be found as part of the "vision" website at SGI

sgi.com

The roadmap is at:

sgi.com

It's chock full-o-stuff, so read carefully. Note that on the somewhat vague time line, the Onyx2, Octane, and O2 are not shown transitioning to IA-64 (Merced) counterparts until CY2000. Noting that the Onyx2 is an Origin 2000 with graphics one might draw the server schedule along similar lines.

Then again, SGI found with the O2000 that business server customers don't tend to be early adopters, so it if a server line emerges, distinct from the Onyx2 replacement and along a different timeline, don't sue me! ;-)

more humble unofficial opinions,

john

Do the MIPs upgrades mean that SGI will have NT running on them before Merced comes out?
