FT,

Is America defined as trying to strike a balance between two
forms of statism (fascism -communism)? Of course not.

I sympathize with your basic distrust of government, as did Jefferson. And I agree that the liberal-conservative split is more semantic in our society than actual. But I do believe in government at some level, as a hedge against anarchy and chaos. Unfortunately, the basic function of government, to protect the life and property of its citizens (all of them) has become lost. Our police officers are lazily manning radar traps while violence occurs in the shopping centers and the really dangerous drivers weave in and out of traffic without causing so much as a blip on the radar screen.

We need government but it needs to be redefined. And it will continue to have this need in a cyclic fashion. Zeev points out

that we will need a recession to pop the stock market bubble. An economic downturn may also be necessary to make significant changes in government. Lets hope the changes will be for the better and not for the worse.
