How much processing power does DVD require? If you intend to play DVD movies on your PC, you should look for a decoding solution that includes dedicated hardware. In that case, even a 200-MHz Pentium MMX PC should suffice as a host system. I'd avoid a software-only decoding solution; if you have to compromise, opt for a hybrid hardware/software solution (and at least a 300-MHz Pentium II processor). I'm personally waiting for upcoming solutions based on C-Cube's new ZiVA-PC chip, which promises high-quality decoding, advanced jog and shuttle features, zooming, and more -- plus the ability to leave enough processor power so you can actually use your PC while watching a DVD movie. Be aware that the graphics card in your system can affect playback as well -- if you're scaling DVD's native format of 720 by 480 pixels to fit your screen, the graphics card has to do that work. zdnet.com ---------- Also take a peek at the posts in the talkback section for a few nuggets like this: "Matrox says they will be releasing a DVD decoder daughtercard for this board (which looks to use another passthrough other than the VGA) in Q3 1998.
