DEC does not make any chips at the moment. What are you talking about?

As to your other point. CPQ / DEC currently do more than $4 Billion annually in Unix business. Do you think the Unix market cares about what processor is under the hood?

As far as standards go, I don't think CPQ is planning on using Alpha in the consumer PC market. In the server market, native Alpha versions of virtually all of the Microsoft software, plus native Oracle versions, pretty much cover the requirements, and niche software can be the standard Intel version run via FX!32, which gives equivalent performance to Intel 350MHZ products.

So as far as I can tell there is no cost difference at all for Alpha software, and the range of server software products covers about everything server customers are interested in. There is a huge difference in credibility between DEC saying that the range of products will be available, and CPQ making that same statement.
