DEC produced a 64 bit PRISM chip in 1985 but never took it to market - Ken Olsen killed it because he thought it would cannibalize the VAX 9000 market. This chip was the forerunner of the Alpha and had many of the same features.

The effort was restarted in 1989 as the Alpha project. Alpha systems were first available in Pilot quantity in 1991.
