<..now that I read it a second time. But it is unclear what QWST's role would be in this situation, since the accord speaks to optical networking..>

In short, you couldn't have an ATM Forum without FORE, an HDSL Forum without Pairgain or an Optical Internetworking Forum without Qwest. And have you ever heard of any forum that wasn't political and flush with competing technologies? Especially if you plan on messing with OSI?

The article goes on to suggest (perhaps as per your re-read) that the Cisco exploration with CIEN of WDM networks is as an argument to IP Terarouter startups like Juniper and (QWST testing) Avici (who are collaborating with NT on the carrier grade IP terarouter. And per PR: "..Nortel intends to develop independent optical wavelength capability to enable interworking between Avici IP switches and Nortel IP-optimized backbone networks...")

<..One thing I'd like to say is that Qwest had better unpaint themselves from this corner they've decided to stand in..>

Having followed QWST for a good while, I have a very different impression. I think Nacchio and company are as tuned in to optical technology and future proofing as they come. They don't NEED to commit to today's WDM technology. They have plenty of time to let the market and tech mature. No doubt, this is the purpose of an optical forum - to consider and battle out standards among current and emerging technologies.

WCOM and T are ANOTHER story. With their aged fiber plant, they don't have anywhere near the LUXURY of waiting for the emergence of SOA or nexgen muxing techniques, of which Soliton WDM is but one.

<"..one should not look directly into a fiber at any time, lest they become blinded by the light....">

As part of a side venture I am involved in, I recently got NACC certified for Fiber Optic and Cat5+ design and installation. In addition to concerns of laser blinding, fiber pieces can enter your skin, penetrate through to and rupture random organs and wreck general internal havoc and possibly death. So best to not EAT or DRINK around fiber installations, either.

On that note, goodnight.
