As I was saying, here is a clip from the CNN website from today regarding the Merced slip. It displays the mainstream media's usual profound grasp of the computer industry.

...The delay is also bad news for workstation manufacturers. Several companies, including Sun Microsystems Inc., Digital Equipment Corp. and Silicon Graphics Inc., have already agreed to support the Merced chip in their units. "It's a negative for companies that will incorporate the product into their workstations and servers," Powers said. "New product cycles are the lifeblood of the technology industry."

Duh.

Readers on this thread know that the Merced slip, though it does affect Solaris on Merced, is a net positive for Sun, who has never done anything but vigorously affirm its commitment to SPARC-only hardware.

But here's proof that the world in general will, at least at first, misunderstand the distinction. Don't you just love it that the article has Sun first on the list of companies who will be adversely affected because they have committed to build Merced machines, when in fact they are the only one on the list who hasn't?

Sheesh.

The SUNW management will have to clarify reality for the media and the street.
