FT,

I fear you are comparing apples and oranges with your tax/royalty premise. I can't quite strike a valid comparison between the automakers and Microsoft, either. There were and are many makes and types of vehicles to choose from.

Long distance charges are something of a sore spot with me. I'll have to think that one over before attempting an objective response.

Gates/MSFT's software competitors that are not already long gone are in intensive-care, meaning the ones who would and could compete on a level playing field in the marketplace, giving the consumer real choice. Gates did not build his empire and attain his exalted position by good works and innovation, but by chicanery and clearly illegal means. Being the meanest and biggest certainly does not equate with being the best.

Netscape does not give its browser away. One can download it for free for personal use only. ISPs purchase licenses for their distribution of Netscape to their customers. All other businesses pay license fees for their use of Netscape. To my knowledge, no one has ever been asked to pay a license fee to Microsoft to use Internet Explorer.

As an aside, there are other Internet browsers which are much better all around than are The Big Two. Opera is one. There's a thread here at SI which discusses the Opera browser. Run a search on "Opera" and you'll find it.

With Microsoft's "marketing" of Internet Explorer, however, I wonder how long these other companies and their innovative and superior browsers will survive?

I hope you're having fun. I certainly am! <g>
