Hi Pat,

I agree with your argument about the need for more bandwidth to businesses/homes before we can take advantage of faster processor speeds. This was the main argument at the 4/98 H&Q tech conference. INTC has been frustrated for years at the RBOCs roadblock. Now, with competition finally arrived from the big US carriers (e.g., AT&T, GTE, Worldcom/MCI), international carrier, various LECs and new fiber optic carriers (Qwest, Williams and Level 3), the RBOCs finally have to spend the billions in required investments.

At the same time, the voice carriers suddenly have trillions of dollars of infrastructure which are quickly (and sooner than expected) becoming obsolete as fiber optics/data networks are installed by the above companies.

Maybe we'll have a nice rotation into the networkers/telecom suppliers and have a push upward like the boxmakers have experienced for the last couple years. At the H&Q conference, they discussed moving out of boxmakers, software and chip equipment sectors and into bandwidth-related companies. djane
