<<Or did the Constitution (which is the foundation of "the State") have nothing to do with it?>>

Bill of Rights was the key. The Articles of Confederation would have been a better choice than the Constitution, imo.

Only way the Federalists got the Constitution through was that the Anti-Federalists insisted on the Bill of Rights - which has reasonably protected us from government encroachment for 150 years - before they would ratify the Constitution. Sadly, this century the courts have nearly vitiated the BoR. Waco, Ruby Ridge, IRS harassment are the result.

The Magna Carta was the foundation of English common law and look at the socialist mess they are in. The French Enlightenment was our Founders' intellectual inspiration in the 18th century - 3 or 4 revolutions later, France is a still a joke. Believe me you don't ever want to have to deal with a European bureaucrat. Ever read Kafka?

Of course, we had the worker's paradise in Russia and we won't even talk about that!

They all had Constitutions. How come they got it so wrong?.

Still, for Europeans, socialism is about all the freedom they can stand. We are talking about people who were ruled by kings for thousands of years. Hey, socialism is a lot better than the feudal lord having the right to sleep with your bride before you . Talk to them about the common good and government altruism and social safety nets. So, from the traditional European vassal's POV, socialism lets them "...livie like pigs in the fat house!" - to quote Butch Coolidge in "'Pulp Fiction".

So, yes the greatest country in the world is the USA...so why would anyone want to change the formula? Yet, the minute the political hyenas get to DC, they're falling all over themselves seeing who can be the biggest statist/socialist.

Our elites look to Europe as the foutainhead of progressive government. Witness Bismark and social insurance in the late 1800's , Sweden as the hallmark of socialism in the 20's etc. All the poobahs in the Ivy league were positively gaga over the stuff . Now, the clique of Oxford Clintonites are doing the same Fabian socialist dance - socialized medicine, tobacco prohibition and meddling in the free market.

We are the only country in history that ever got it all splendidly right - individuals are the focus: government but a necessary evil. sanctity of contracts and private property, free market capitalism, free speech and limited government. That is why we we are the greatest country in history

People having the liberty to pursue their own self interest. Not government.

Can't we see how right we have been!

Ciao,

Daniel
