thanks for your feedback, jerry. now, ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready to rum-bull !!! previews (and techweb excerpts) of supahcomm '98: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ June 01, 1998, TechWeb NewsNetworking Chips Vitesse, Lucent gear up for Supercomm -- Sonet integration stressed By Loring Wirbel Atlanta - Higher integration of Sonet processing functions is one of the key themes of this year's Supercomm show, opening here June 8. The 2.5-Gbit/second OC-48 rate, which is finding new favor as a basic building block of transmission lines, is a realm where vendors of gallium-arsenide and bipolar chips can leverage mixed-signal expertise. In the 155-Mbit/s OC-3 and 622-Mbit/s OC-12 world, CMOS predominates. Examples from these markets can be found in the offerings of Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (Camarillo, Calif.) and Lucent Microelectronics (Allentown, Pa.), respectively. Vitesse is integrating multiplexing, clocking and laser-driver functions for 2.5-Gbit/s Sonet in GaAs devices, enabling OC-48 channels in low-cost, low-power systems that fit on a tabletop. Lucent, meanwhile, is integrating digital functionality in standard submicron CMOS. Its telecom group will demonstrate at Supercomm a mapper/multiplexer device for combining T1 and E1 channels into an OC-3 stream.techweb.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ June 01, 1998, TechWeb NewsChip makers taking aim at SONET/SDH By Mark LaPedus Silicon Valley -- In what could be a sneak preview of next week's Supercomm '98 trade show in Atlanta, several chip makers have begun rushing out products designed for the emerging fiber-optic market. Applied Micro Circuits Corp., Lucent Technologies Inc., TranSwitch Corp., Vitesse Semiconductor Corp., and a slew of other companies will show SONET/SDH chips at the show, which will be held June 7-11. Chip makers are moving into this market for good reason: Total investments in SONET equipment will grow to $6.3 billion by 2002 from $2.8 billion in 1997, according to Insight Research Corp., Parsippany, N.J.techweb.com
