Rudedog, I can't help but say "You folks in Houston all think alike". I have a friend in your town and we have the same "arguments" over & over :)

I won't argue with you on all points (we'll be here all night). But....

1. CPQ & DEC aren't in the same league. CPQ is a box assembler, DEC is a technology house. This is like a scientist marrying an electrician. Don't get me wrong, it was a good move on CPQ's part. This is the only way they will move to the big leagues if they ever do. Department heads and mom & pop shops make decisions in a very different way than those running mission critical apps. I know, because I ran them until 4 years ago. DEC has credibility and CPQ doesn't in those shops. That's plain & simple. CPQ servers run as departmental servers.

2. Hardware (Merced or other) doesn't create markets. Applications do. That's why Intel went to kiss SAP's butt 2 years ago to get them & others to port their apps to Wintel environments.

3. Dec got the cooperation of MSFT because some say they were about to sue MSFT over NT (way before it was popular) which was getting closer & closer to VMS. Gee, I wonder who's building NT for MSFT? So rest assured, MSFT didn't jump up for Dec nothing.

4. I didn't know CPQ had a relationship with developers.

AS I put it to my friend from Houston when the merger was 1st announced: this is a major blow to Digital as they had to bow to the pedestrians from ....

Oh never mind, don't get me going now ;)

p.s. just ignore the date of this article and it's as newsworthy as any you read today.

Rudedog,

Where did you hear that Microsoft was developing NT-64 on Alpha?

Thanks,
Mike
