Backfill,

The phrase is "a lot," not "allot."

Backfill, two points in response to your message:

(1) >>There is allot of companies breathing down Intel's neck, and they know it.<<

Although a lot of companies might be catching up (or passing) INTC technologically, that's only half the battle. INTC has the manufacturing capacity that the others don't. Whether or not others can match INTC's performance (and I think it is clear that they can), they still cannot make enough chips to dethrone INTC. The lack of capacity also impacts the competitors' margins, making it difficult for them to undercut INTC by too large a margin.

(2) >>Realy a six month delay is not that much time, it is merely one or two cycles of learning.<<

I agree that six months is not that long, particularly with INTC's market share lead. It doesn't look like a six month delay, however. Merced was slated for mid-1999, and now we're looking at mid-2000. Despite statements by INTC's brass about this "six month" delay, it's really a delay of about a year. Nonetheless, INTC has plenty of 32 bit processing technology to keep consumers occupied for the next few years.

All MHO, of course.
