246810,

I don't know about Oak Point or Oak Island, but when I visited the NYRR yards last fall they were hauling garbage at that time. If I remember correctly, someone said if it was not handled by float it took about 5 days longer to go up and around the switchyard. At that time they were handling several floats of garbage boxcars a day and expecting that traffic to increase. Their was a site nearby that received the garbage from the city, compacted it into bales and loaded it into the box cars. NYRR was daily bringing empty cars from the Jersey side to Brooklyn and loaded ones back.
