The company that is really impacted by Merced's delay is Compaq. I think you have got it backwards. CPQ is one of the few companies in a position to benefit directly from the Merced delay (although I also think Dell will benefit indirectly through upramp of high end 32 bit systems).

In case you have not been following events, CPQ is about to buy DEC, which sells a few 'real enterprise servers'. MSFT was also ramping up to 64 bit NT, now they will have to shift that development to Alpha, which is apparently already happening based on press reports. DEC and MSFT have announced plans to support NT on DEC's high end turbolaser alpha machines (you know, the ones who just set a world record 100,000 TPM-C number, more than twice as high as the number 2 benchmark). This also puts CPQ in the catbird seat as a lead 64 bit player with both a merced and an Alpha strategy. As long as CPQ and MSFT can keep a good 64 bit compatibility story this should give CPQ a pretty good run for a year or so ahead of others in the 64 bit space.

I have had a lot of discussion on the Intel and CPQ threads on this subject, as well as here, and most knowledgeable people seem to agree with my position. Any thoughts?

Hazem, thanks for the interesting overview of the Merced issue. Do you see any impact to Dell?

I suspect CPQ/DEC will continue to push the Alpha chip. CPQ will continue to sell the Alpha DEC systems.
