Sam, there is something I would like to know about, and you may be the person who can tell me. I have read that there were sixteen crucified saviors before Christ--all in the pagan religions prior to his birth. The one who fascinates me is named Hesus. He was a Celtic Druid, and was crucified, I believe, in 834 B.C. Do you know anything about him?

I know that crucifixion and resurrection symbolize the death of the animal spirit, and the birth of humanity, according to Joseph Campbell in "The Power of Myth". I am also aware of the resurrection mythology coming from Egypt with the story of Isis and Orisis. At the same time, having read widely on the historicity of Jesus, I am convinced that he did really exist, but that his story has been changed significantly, and embellished. Do you think, for one thing, that his birth name was Jesus? It is so similar to Hesus that I am quite curious about that.

And what do you think is historically true about Jesus' death? From what I have been able to sort out that makes sense, he was executed as a common criminal, at the edge of town, basically because he was fomenting agitation among the huge crowds who had come into town for Passover. I think Pontius Pilate saw him as a simple troublemaker. I believe he was a very compassionate man who was troubled by injustice, a man who loved women as equals, a visionary. However, since there is nothing in the historical record for over a hundred years after his death from what I have read, I have to assume that he was a minor character at the time, whose significance was recognized after his death.

Anything you can add, particularly about Hesus and the other crucified saviors, would be of interest, Sam. Thanks!
