The TeraStack(TM) Switch: A High Density Stackable Fibre Channel Switch

LONDON, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was issued today by TeraStack in conjunction with the Red Herring Venture Market Europe Conference:

Fibre Channel is a vibrant fast growing market that one analyst forecasted to be 1 billion dollars by 1999. Fibre Channel does not have dominant manufacturers such as Cisco 3Com or Bay in the Ethernet market. This is a great opportunity for TeraStack to apply its advanced technology to a fast growing market with relatively little competition.

"Our technology was first conceived for Gigabit Ethernet switching. When we started TeraStack, one of our objectives was to emulate the success of the Ethernet stacking hubs in providing cost effective solution with the ability to add ports as and when required. The technological challenge in applying this stacking to Gigabit Switching resided in making sure that all the ports could deliver full wire speed without any blocking. We have a design for the TeraStack switch which achieves this. There is nothing equivalent in either Gigabit Ethernet or Fibre Channel, the latter is a more exciting market and the focus of our venture."

The TeraStack comes as a switch of 4, 8 or 12 ports. Each port supports 1 Gigabits per second full duplex Fibre Channel. All the ports are switched using a matrix which offers non blocking wire speed in all configurations -- up to 120 ports can be connected in a TeraStack.

"I am Jeff Pinkham, the instigator of this Venture. I am determined to lead TeraStack into Storage Area Networks prominence as the first step to fulfilling my vision of networking leadership in the 21st century. I look forward to introducing you to my team of 4 very talented engineers.

"We are very enthusiastic about the prospects. We have invested several man years in research. We will launch the TeraStack at Networld Interop 99 in Atlanta; our business plan forecasts sales of $59 million by the 3rd year of sales.

"We are now seeking an investor to provide TeraStack with $8.5 million of fundings."
