peacelover,

I was interested in your comments on the reliability of CPQ machines. I work for a company that uses Dell as a standard. Over the last six months I have purchased for my area around 210 PII 266 PCs for use in a claims processing high production environment running certain imaging applications.

These Dell machines are simply junk. Approximately 3-5% of the boxes were DOA and with less than six months use, I am keeping a technician busy full time trouble shooting hardware problems and returning boxes and montiors for repair. When I complain to our IT area, I'm told their testing still shows Dell to be head and shoulders over other manufacturers. Dell has become to hardware what Microsoft has become to software; namely, a copout answer for businesses who don't want to risk not following the herd.

My Gateway (brought before I became a CPQ shareholder - sorry) runs circles around Dell.

Peacelove, allow me to offer two more latest anecdotal examples on Compaq computers at corporation level at the number one and number two companies in Seattle area. Then I will answer your comment that "I hope people stop attacking quality of cpq machines on heresay." I don't know if I should name the two companies but you know who they are:

1. I already mentioned here before that until recently I worked for "the" software company where during the years my personal desktop computers (other than servers and laptops) transitioned form IBM, Compaq, Gateway and latest Dell, it has been the trend throughout the company. However, today my friend who still works in the company just told me that all their new office machines are Dells lately. He also mentioned that some of their coworkers for a particular software product have been complaining about Compaq machines. They have a compatibility lab that test their software on all machines and they track all the problems in the database. Compaq has more complains.

2. Another friend of mine works for "the" airplane manufacturer. He told me that Compaq used to be the major account that they buy their computers from. Now it is Dell. Almost all of their new desk computers are from Dell now instead of Compaq as before.

This doesn't necessarily indicate that Compaq's desktop computers are bad machines. This indicates the purchasing decision of the corporations after their COMPARISON of price/perfomance and service qualities. While Compaq is still the leader in market share, I worry about the trend. Do you think it is an accident that Compaq and Dell are in big contrast in their profit results lately? What caused their loss of Compaq's main seller positions to Dell with the above two world leader companies?

I don't believe that I or someone else here who express their concerns on the reported information and personal observation related to Compaq is "attacking quality of cpq machines on heresay" if you read more than one message here on this topic. One of the links I posted was a survey report.

I believe you when you said your company is very satisfied with Compaq computers and I don't say that you are "praising quality of cpq machines on heresay". However if upon comparison, you found a better deal and better quality, you might consider switching. Remember who was number one before Compaq?

The purpose my posting to these valid concerns are not attacking Compaq but to draw people(or better Compaq if any of you have connection there)'s attention to it and make them realize it and improve on it. I already mentioned here that I sent email to Compaq on their web site and I was not successful due to their web site problem. I hope Compaq be alerted for their problems IF they didn't realize or thinks everything is fine for them as you do. I would like to hear some comments from someone working for Compaq here.

Also notice I did not comment on Compaq servers in this message.

Regards,

Shawn
