Is AltaVista comparable to Yahoo or Excite? Not a chance. Altavista is far behind even LCOS and SEEK. If you have been paying close attention though, you would have noticed some very noticable differences in AltaVista as of late. One, I believe they added e-mail and two, they started up there own financial section. It should be only a matter of time before they add some chat and message board functions. AltaVista still needs a lot of work.

As for why I think Compaq will spin off ALtaVista: $$$ and to make the shareholders happy. Also, it doesn't seem to fit anywhere into Compaq's mold. I have read that DEC last year planned an AltaVista IPO, yet later decided against it. Many of the original designers of AltaVista got angry and left. I don't see Compaq making that same "mistake." I see Compaq adding a lot of features to AltaVista...allowing it to pull in a relatively decent amount of revenue and then spinning it off.
