<<NEC announces 300mm Roseville fab>>

I think the one thing we have learned in the past six months is that announcements of new fabs by Asian companies must be considered in the context of their economies. There are several DRAM fabs being planned and hopefully they will be built on schedule. But let's remember none of these are done deals. There is every possibility that the situation in Japan will get worse before it gets better and that even the current building plans, which reflect a pretty big reduction in prior capital expenditures, could get even worse.

NEC, if I remember correctly, has had the strongest recent performance of major Japanese chipmakers and is still showing a profit (correct me if I'm wrong) so the Roseville fab is more likely to stay on schedule than some. But even so, there is a small but appreciable chance of a major additional financing meltdown in Japan.

As to the Koreans, I would be surprised if there aren't problems in meeting current schedules.

This factor needs to be addressed and assessed by anyone counting on 300mm and/or 256mb DRAM fabs for revenues to a security they are buying.
