Toshiba Unveils 480p DVD Player
- -June 1, 1998

By Greg Tarr

Toshiba used the introduction of the world's first DVD video player with progressive-scan output to highlight its 1998 video line, which includes three DTV-ready rear-projection sets, each capable of native 480p and 1080i ATSC format display.

Surprisingly, it was the new Platinum Standard DVD player and not the complementary DTV-capable sets -- which include one widescreen TheaterWide and two 4:3 Cinema Series models -- that took center stage at Toshiba's 1998 line send-off. This was due, in part, to the lack of a Toshiba-built DTV tuner/decoder to enable the sets to receive digital signals.

Marketing VP Steve Nickerson said such a set-top was likely to follow next year, when it will possibly be joined by an integrated DTV/receiver system.

However, Nickerson said Toshiba DTV-ready sets should be compatible with DTV set-tops with component video outputs -- DTV Interface Terminals -- sold by some other manufacturers this year.

The sets will display digital signals in either the 480p or 1080i formats, and it will be up to the set-top box to upconvert or downconvert other formats to one of these two modes.

Additionally, all three sets offer dual NTSC tuners for conventional interlace 480i display.

All Toshiba DTV-ready sets will also include a ColorStream Pro progressive- scan input to connect with the top-of-the-line SD-7108 ($1,200 suggested retail) DVD player and produce conventional DVD material in the 480p format.

Pictures were said to deliver a "more film-like" image, absent of many of the picture artifacts introduced when the progressive-scan content on a DVD is converted by the DVD video player into interlace-scan output. Toshiba called the player "the first DTV player prepared for the DTV era."

The SD-7108 will also output conventional interlace signals through other connections such as component video (ColorStream), S-video, and composite jacks.

Nickerson also celebrated Toshiba's status as the first manufacturer to introduce its third generation of DVD players. Other models in the line include the SD-2008 (due in July at $399.95), the $600 SD-2108 (due in June at $499.95), and the SD-3108 (due in August at $799.95).
