Doug - AT&T's TDMA (IS-136) is almost completely unrelated to GSM's TDMA systems. To say that they have the same system is like saying you and I have the same kind of car because both of us use an 8 cylinder piston engine. Among other things IS-136 and GSM differ in control channel usage, voice channel assignments, vocoder (I think IS-136 uses the same vocoder as IS-54), ... . So, no, your IS-136 phone would not work in Europe.

PS And contrary to some expectations, GSM does actually use some aspects of CDMA, albeit extremely simplified.
