>>What is the difference between the Deskstar 5 and 8?<<

You can compare a Deskstar 8 (8.x GB) to a Deskstar 5 ( 6.x GB) at Storage Review
click on Database
storagereview.com

The 8 edges out the five more than the 5 edges out the 8.

I do not see a difference in primary drives specs ( RPM, seek time, interface)

The difference I noted is from the IBM site. It looks like a marginal step. They are using new head technology which enables the higher data density. The Deskstar 8 series has higher capacity drives, although they do overlap.

Deskstar 8... 8.4 GB $254 Price Watch, seems hard to beat.

storage.ibm.com
The world's first desktop PC drive with IBM's MRX (MagnetoresistiveExtended) head technology, Deskstar 8 sets a new desktop drive density world record at 1.74 billion bits per square inch. No bigger than the head of a pin, the MRX head technology component sends out stronger signals than the older head, meaning it can read and write larger volumes of information in a smaller space.

Getting close to putting in your order? Are you sticking with Win95?

just curious

Deskstar..Overclocking..>> Now that the market is moving to 100mhz bus, will this HD be problematic in this environment?<<

Sorry, forgot part 2. We need confirmation here but I don't think it is an issue. Not everything on the new board is 100 MHz. The overclockers have tricks to speed things up. Things like multipliers. With the ratios the harddrive will be at the same speed as it would be on an LX board. I could get more specific but I would have to do a little research first, front side bus? etc.

Front Bus and PCI Bus

The front bus speed can have an impact on the PCI bus IF you are OC (and the impact is from the OC not really the front bus). Normal operation, the PCI bus runs at standard speed and therefore no problem. Of course when PCI bus speed does jump to 66 in future, ALL IO will have to change.

Deskstar 5 is an earlier model, smaller capacity. The 8 has newer technology.
